A 31-year-old man has been stabbed outside the Home Affairs refugee centre in Maitland during a brawl with an alleged robber.

Police spokesman Inspector Siyabulela Vukubi said the man had been stabbed in the back and arm on Thursday and taken to hospital. He was in a stable condition.

The police arrested a 25-year-old man and have charged him with assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

The alleged assailant is due to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court on Monday. He reportedly tried to steal the victim's cellphone.
