A Somali man was killed while two others were wounded in a hijacking in Nyanga yesterday.

The men were driving through Nyanga on their way to Phillipi when they were cornered by three gunmen while stopped at an intersection. The men were redirected to a different spot where the shooting occurred.

Police spokesman Fred van Wyk said that there is no reason to believe that this is a hate crime. Van Wyk “Police are investigating a case of murder, attempted murder and hijacking. This is regarded as a crime incident and cannot be attributed as violence against certain foreign nationals”.

Police re-assured the public that they were taking the rumours of xenophobic attacks seriously and systems and structures were in place to deal with xenophobic violence should it arise.
